A baby’s cry sounds in the background as the scene opens to a small, one-bedroom apartment in Kabul, Afghanistan, sometime after the American troops pulled out of Afghanistan. Thus begins the fascinating play, Selling Kabul, by Sylvia Khoury, produced by Premiere Stages at Kean University. This 100minute play tackles the difficult topic of the aftermath of America’s troop withdrawal from the war that lasted from 2001 – 2021. Taliban victories across that country escalated America’s retreat and, unfortunately, not all the Afghanistan interpreters were afforded their promised visas to come to America. How soon we forget the tragedy of that situation and the people left behind.
