The St. Thomas Aquinas football Trojans stormed over the visiting Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders, 350, in Edison on September 8. The 30 Trojans scored three touchdowns in the first quarter then added two more in the second quarter to activate the Mercy Rule clock.
Raider junior quarterbackAnthony Romano completed three of eight pass attempts for 46 yards. Wide receiver Cooper Tamase had two receptions for 27 yards and Jacob Handy had a 19-yard reception. The Raiders accumulated 173 yards rushing and Romano had 78 of them on 10 carries. Callum Fynes carried seven times for 55 yards and TJ Rasberry carried five times for 20 yards. Jake Fezza and John Boyle both carried twice for a total of nine yards and Matteo Barcellona had a two-yard run.
Trojan quarterback Roman Blanks completed three of six passes for 45 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted once. Cole Watkins completed one pass for five yards and was also intercepted once. On the ground, Elijah Abass-Shereef carried seven times for 124 yards, including a pair of TDs. Chase Young carried 10 times for 90 yards, including a TD. Chris Magliacano had a 37-yard TD run. Watkins carried twice for 12 yards and Anthony Perez had a one-yard carry. Shawn Young had a nine-yard touchdown catch.Abass-Shereef had a five-yard grab, Tyler Nerges had a 32-yard reception and Josiah Zayas had a four-yard reception.
Defensively for the Raiders, Fynes was involved in eight tackles and added one fumble recovery and an interception. Handy had an interception. Noah Ricca was involved in 11 tackles, Tom Dowling had eight and Jerry Mundle had seven tackles.
ShawnYoung scored the first touchdown on a nine-yard reception from Blanks and Jack Joyce kicked the first of his five points after. Chase Young scored next on a two-yard bash the Abass-Shereef made the score 21-0 with a 25-yard run. In the second quarter, Magliacano broke loose for a 37-yard touchdown run then Abass-Shereef made the score 35-0 with a 10-yard scoot.
