WESTFIELD – With the blasting of Alicia Keys’ pop hit “This Girl is on Fire” as pre-and postplay music, the audience got the message right away that this might not be the play they read in World Literature class back in college. The revised interpretation of Antigone presented by Westfield High School Theatre Department last weekend is Sophocles’ tale from 441 B.C. that was first performed at the Festival of Dionysus that year. But this version is the modern retelling of the classic by poet and bestselling Scottish writer Hollie McNish. With fresh eyes from the 21st century and a dash of humor in a basically dark tale, Ms. McNish manages to pull in the audience and reveal parallels for modern times.
