It’s time – actually may be pastime as I am sending this late to the newspaper -for my annual – ‘garbage after Christmas letter’! I think things are getting better in the garbage world, but we still have a long way to go. The sight of plastic bags in our streets, or hanging from trees and poles has virtually disappeared. But take a ride out on Route 78 into Pennsylvania, and you will still see them. Bars and restaurants continue to give us straws and we take them. Restaurants no longer put leftovers in Styrofoam containers, but many of the new containers are recyclable #5; not the best recyclable source. We may recycle at home, but as soon as we go to a party, we forget and throw our recyclables into the garbage. We buy ‘plastic water bottles’ and leave them on the ground. Why do our streets contain so many little liquor bottles? And people do not seem able to reduce their household garbage. How does one create four containers of garbage every week?
