Seeded third in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 5 Tournament, the Westfield High School wrestling team defeated the sixth-seeded Elizabeth Minutemen, 48-27, in the quarterfinal round on February 5 before falling to second-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan in the semifinal at Bridgewater.
In the quarterfinals, the Blue Devils recorded four pins, a forfeit and three majority decision over the 1511 Minutemen. Jake Conti (106-lbs) pinned Angel Gonzalez in 1:11, Lena Wright (113) received a forfeit and Josh Semler pinned Ben Fabiani in 1:00 at 120-lbs. Max Rotter (126) pinned Jayden Rivera in 1:34 then Luke Sluberski (132) pinned Jahdomy Pedro in :34.
Minuteman Bravlio Villafana pinned Seth Bekker in 2:34 at 138lbs then Blue Devils Dylan Sontz (144) won by 14-5, majority decision over Jamore Wyatt and Elias Wood (150) pinned Bob Vasquez in 3:16. After Minuteman Varson Siryon (157) received a forfeit, Blue Devil Jack McDermott (165) grabbed a 16-5, majority decision over Antoine Williams. Minuteman Gabe Salazar (175) pinned Ben Diziki in 4:39. Blue Devil Jake Zemsky (190) won by 16-5, majority decision over Jaquyri Williams then Elizabeth won the final two bouts with Tim Smith (215) receiving a forfeit and Chris Almeida (285) edging Noah Neimiera, 7-5.
In the loss to 17-6 Bridgewater-Raritan, Zemsky (190) defeated Lerrod Smalls, 4-2. Sontz dropped a 4-0 decision to Matt McCann at 138lbs and Sluberski lost 11-7 to Matt Diaz at 126-lbs.
