Westfield Tops CHE for State Title

The No. 1 Westfield High School boys swim team made it two-in-arow by defeating Cherry Hill East (CHE), 90-80, for the NJSIAA Group A Championship at Rutgers University on February 25. Anchored by junior Owen Waibel, the 15-0 Blue Devils took first in the 200-medley relay and the 400freestyle relay. Additionally, the Blue Devils took first in four individual events and Waibel was the top in the 50-freestyle at 21.2 and the 100-freestyle at 47.25.

With the triumph over CHE, it marked the 28th State Title for the Blue Devil boys. Last year the Blue Devils defeated CHE with a similar score of 91-79.

Danny Pierce, Dylan Lagrimas, Logan Swenson and Waibel touched first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:35.02. The Blue Devils also took third at 1:39.98. Mike Fisher, Swenson, Pierce and Waibel won the 400-freestyle relay in 3:16.04. Pierce finished first in the 100-backstroke at 51.07, while Dylan Altman finished third at 54.87. Lagrimas won the 100breaststroke at 59.2.

Fisher took second in the 200-free at 1:44.27, followed by Artem Dobrovolskyi at 1:47.72 and Charlie Jeckell at 1:49.56. Cole Sharkey was second in the 200-Individual Medley at 1:57.36 and Lagrimas was fourth at 1:59. Pierce at 51.12 and Swenson at 51.64 finished 2-3 in the 100-butterfly. Sharkey was second in the 500free at 4:48.99, while Dobrovolskyi at 4:55.25 and Wes Young at 4:58.99 finished 4-5. Dan McGann at 22.37 and Altman at 22.47 finished 3-4 in the 50-free.

Fisher at 48.51 and McGann at 49.25 finished 3-4 in the 100-free. Swenson, Fisher, Jeckell and McGann finished second in the 200-free relay at 1:29.18, followed by Hudson Wilcomes, Lagrimas, Ben Nematadzira and Sharkey at 1:32.09.
