ALJ Crusaders Lost 1st Two, Defeat West Essex in Baseball

The David Brearley High School baseball team only got one hit but managed to capitalize on some free passes and crafty base running to shut out the AL Johnson Crusaders, 3-0, on April 1. Three days later, the Summit Hilltoppers took it out on the Crusaders, 8-0. But on April 6, they edged the 2-1 West Essex Knights, 2-1.

Reymundo Gonzalez had two RBI. Matt Didonato walked, was hit, stole a base and scored once. Dom Russo walked and scored once. Nico DeLuca was hit by a pitch.

Crusader Sean Patterson went 2for-3. Justin Zdeb singled and was hit by a pitch. Rob Gallagher and Tom Huff each singled once and Kyle Thompson walked and was hit by a pitch. Losing pitcher Steve Vigliotti tossed five innings and allowed one hit, while walking three and hitting a batter. Nick Donofrio relieved and allowed no hits, while striking out two.

Dan Metrocha singled and walked in the loss to Summit. Gallagher walked, was hit by a pitch and stole a base. Patterson, who was charged with the loss, walked once. Vince Cilento took one for the team and Anthony Minniti walked once.

Summit’s Ryan Barber went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Winning pitcher Matt Kurek, who recorded 11 strikeouts, had two hits, walked and scored once. Chris Moglia singled and had two RBI. Luke Jacobson doubled and had two RBI. ShaneWalsh doubled and scored once.
