WESTFIELD — The Westfield Police Department is investigating two separate, single-car accidents that occurred in town within a 24-hour period this week.
At approximately 11:20 a.m. on Sunday, a single motor vehicle traveling southbound on Gallows Hill Road veered out of its lane before leaving the roadway and landing at the bottom of an embankment near a Fairview Cemetery stream.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified in police reports as a 68-year-old man from Garwood, allegedly lost consciousness while behind the wheel due to an undisclosed medical problem. The man sustained minor injuries during the crash and the vehicle was removed from the scene.
Then, at approximately 10:17 a.m. on Monday, police responded to reports of a second single-car incident, involving a Tesla that crashed into the front steps of a residential property on Central Avenue.
The Tesla’s driver, identified in police reports only as an adult male, and its female passenger both had to be extricated from the car by the Westfield Fire Department. The female passenger sustained critical injuries, police said, and both she and the driver were transported from the scene to University Hospital in Newark.
Police say that Monday morning’s incident also occurred as the result of “some type of medical episode” that overtook the driver.
Central Avenue remained closed for several hours as police carried out their investigations.
