The Westfield High School boys tennis team lost to Christian Brothers Academy (CBA), 3-2, in the first round then defeated Episcopal (Pa), 4-1, in the consolation round of the Newark Academy Invitational on May 11.
Against 20-4 CBA, Vincenzo Caruso defeated Blue Devil Ben Duan, 6-2, 4-1 (retired) at first singles. Jaden Vigneri (CBA) topped Deven Patel, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, at second singles. Luke Brennan (CBA) defeated Evan Sewald, 6-3, 6-1, at third singles. Westfield won both doubles matches with Colin Cimeo and Cole Hornbeck topping Zach Cooper and Julian Voorhees, 7-5, 6-0, at first doubles, and Chris Winters and Evan Kahn stopping Henry Dohrenwend and Ari Macaluso, 6-2, 6-0, at second doubles.
Against Episcopal, the 16-4 Blue Devils won all but first singles when Connor Chambers defeated Patel, 76 (7-4), 6-2.At second singles, Sewald beat Dave Ding, 6-2, 6-3. Winters jumped up to third singles and topped Noah Ganzhorn, 6-1, 6-2. Cimei and Hornbeck stopped Sam Graham and Gavin Schmidt, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 at first doubles. Kahn and Justin Lee beat Dan Adibi and Alan Zho, 6-1, 6-3, at second doubles.
