FANWOOD — The borough council this week approved an ordinance that will ensure that private properties where salt is being stored — such as landscaping companies — are complying with new state regulations designed to prevent salt from running off into stormwater streams.
The purpose of the ordinance is to prevent stored salt and other solid deicing materials from being exposed to stormwater, and it establishes requirements for the storage of salt and other solid de-icing materials on properties not owned or operated by a municipality.

The governing body also gave its support to legislation being considered by state legislators (Senate bill 2511 and Assembly bill 4051) that would ban the sale of cats, dogs and rabbits by pet shops — so-called puppy mills — that have come under fire for not always treating animals in humane ways.
Council President Kathy Mitchell said the recycling center will not be open to the pubic in December because of the ongoing leaf-collection program. The borough holiday treelighting celebration, including visits with Santa, will be held on Sunday, December 8, from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the north-side train station. Those wishing to have face time with Santa are asked to register in advance on the borough website.

Mayor Colleen Mahr said at the November 11 event that veterans are owed “a great debt for everything you have done for us. You have enriched our lives, you have served our nation, and you have sacrificed.”
