GARWOOD — During Thursday night’s regular meeting of the Garwood mayor and council, Mayor Jen Blumenstock suspended the regular order of business to honor the First Aid Squad with a proclamation recognizing the organization’s 85 years of service.
The Garwood First Aid Squad started on September 25, 1939. Members of the squad have dedicated their service over the years to the Borough of Garwood and surrounding communities. Members have responded to more than 300 calls throughout the year and host CPR classes, blood drives and other life-saving services. They also host community events such as pictures with Santa and craft fairs. Squad personnel further attend other community events like Garwood Rocks and the annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting.
“The Garwood First Aid Squad is regularly on standby at community events, ready to ensure the safety of all who attended,” said Mayor Blumenstock. “The Garwood First Aid Squad is a critical, vital part of the Borough of Garwood, which both increases public safety and ensures a stronger community.”
“I want to thank you for the opportunity. We support the borough, and we try our best. It’s not easy at times, but we work at it. We have a good relationship with the borough, the police department, and the fire department, and we’re going to continue. I want to say thank you from all our members,” said one member of the Garwood First Aid Squad.
Resident Jill Pall also congratulated the Garwood First Aid Squad during the public comment of Thursday night’s meeting. She urged any residents looking to make charitable financial donations for the holidays to remember the volunteer members of the first aid squad when making their donations.
