Talking Business

Unity Bancorp., Inc., a full-service community financial services company operating in four counties including Union County, has reported a 41 percent increase, or $104 million, in assets from December 31, 1998, through June 30. Total deposits rose 44 percent, or $100 million, to $327 million.

In announcing its second quarter results, the Clinton-based firm revealed that its total assets of June 30 had reached $359 million.

During the first six months of 1999, Unity Bancorp opened 10 new retail financial service centers, bringing the total franchise to 17 centers. Startup and other related costs resulted in an increase in Unity's loan loss provision to $600,000.

Among Unity's centers are Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Kenilworth and Springfield in Union County.

Summit's largest taxpayer,

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp.,

announced that it is moving 30 employees to its Manhattan location bracing municipal officials for the possibility the company might exit the city. A report in the July 30 edition of The star-Ledger revealed that Novartis pays $4 million in property taxes for its 88-acre site on Morris Avenue.

Novartis was created upon the merger of Ciba Geigy and Sandoz.

The Ledger also noted that

Kempler Insurance is rumored to be leaving after 45 years in the city. Kempler occupies a 138,000 squarefoot site on Morris Avenue.

Bloomfield College recently promoted Steve Patchett of Scotch Plains to Manager of Media Relations.

Mr. Patchett joined the college in 1995 as a development writing associate.

In his new position, Mr. Patchett will handle all aspects of media rela

tions, serve as editor for the alumni magazine and internal newsletter and assist with advertising and government relations.

He all teaches journalism and serves as advisor to the student newspaper, In Print. He previously served as Sports Editor with Nutleybased Orechio Publications, a chain of weekly newspapers in Essex County. Prior to that, he was a sports reporter for The San Francisco Independent.

* * * * * Bonnie Bell, a 1981 Westfield high School graduate and currently the Director of Personnel at the law firm of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, has been awarded DuPont Legal's Golden Eagle Award.

Ms. Bell was recognized for her role as the Coordinator of the DuPont Primary Law Firm and Service Providers Minority Job Fairs.

The Golden Eagle Award recognizes extraordinary accomplishments that result in a significant benefit to the corporation and its customers. The award is DuPont Legal's highest honor.

Ms. Bell's parents still reside in Westfield.

The law firm, established in the 1880s, has offices in Baltimore, Camden, Denver, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C. Ms. Bell, a restaurant of Pennsylvania, works out of the Philadelphia office.

Vincenza Camporeale Joins Weichert Office

Barbara Callahan Awarded President's Elite Membership

WESTFIELD – Barbara Callahan, a broker sales associate with the Westfield office of Coldwell Banker, has been named to the company's International President's Elite, an honor achieved by fewer than 2 percent of the more than 69,000 Coldwell Banker sales associates throughout North America.

Ms. Callahan was among the company's top sales associates named to the group at the International Business Conference in San Diego, Cali

fornia. With a sales volume of $9.5 million in 1998, she earned New

Jersey Association of Realtors Million Dollar Club membership at the Silver Level.

Ms. Callahan has been an area resident for more than 20 years. She is a member of the Soroptimists of Greater Westfield, a women's organization involved in fundraising for civic affairs.

President's Award Given To Jackie Cash by League

WESTFIELD – Westfield resident Jackie Cash received the 1998 1999 President's Award for outstanding service at the annual meeting of the Junior League of Elizabeth Plainfield (JLEP) held recently at the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield.

The award is given each year to the volunteer who has contributed the most time and effort to the Junior League and to her community.

Mrs. Cash transferred to JLEP three years ago from the Westchester League. In 1996-1997, she was a member of the Membership Activities Committee; in 1997-1998 she was the Assistant Chairwoman of the Membership Activities Committee, and last year she was the Chairwoman of the Rosemary Cucarro Medical

Day Care Center Committee. Mrs. Cash was President of the Newcomers Club in 1995-1996. She is also active in the Sundance Nursery School Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Franklin School PTA and is involved in the Big Sister Program of Hudson County.

She lives in Westfield with her husband Mike, and their three children, Devin, 6, Michael, 4 and Jack, 20 months.

The Junior League of Elizabeth Plainfield is an organization of women committed to improving their communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Coldwell's Shea Earns Silver Level

WESTFIELD – Kathy Shea, a real estate professional with over two decades of experience, has earned 1998 Silver Level status with the New Jersey Association of Realtors (NJAR) Million Dollar Club. She has earned this honor for 15 consecutive years.

A resident of Westfield for over 25 years, Ms. Shea has been recognized by the NJAR Million Dollar Club for every year since 1983. She is also an NJAR Distinguished Sales Club member. During the past year, she was named Associate of the Month in her office and received membership to Coldwell Banker's International President's Circle.

Ms. Shea has also been active in the local Toys for Tots program for over 12 years.

Elvira Ardrey of Coldwell Earns Silver Level Status

WESTFIELD – Elvira Ardrey, a sales associate at Coldwell Banker in Westfield, has achieved Silver Level status within the 1998 New Jersey Association of Realtors (NJAR) Million Dollar Club. This is the 11th consecutive year she has been named to the club.

Active with Coldwell Banker since 1975, she has

been recognized with other awards. She is frequently awarded by the NJAR Million Dollar Club. She is a Distinguished Sales Club member. She is also a member of the International President's Circle of Coldwell Banker.

Ms. Ardrey is a Westfield resident. She is an active member of the Friends of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra.

Weichert Realtors Achieve Office Awards For June

WESTFIELD — James M. Weichert, president of Weichert Realtors, has announced that sales associates Lola E. Reed, Brenda Putzer, Niki Fry and Pat Manfra have won June office awards.

A resident of Cranford and licensed real estate professional, Ms. Reed is married and has two children. She won an award for outstanding sales dollar volume.

Ms. Putzer, a licensed real estate professional for 12 years, is a member of the Westfield Board of Realtors and the Garden State Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Her accomplishments include membership in Weichert's Million Dollar Sales and Marketed Clubs and the 1998 New Jersey State Million Dollar Club. She won an award for the largest transaction unit.

She is married and has four children and recently moved to Plainfield from Westfield. A former resident of Fanwood, she serves home buyers and sellers in Union, Somerset and Middlesex Counties.

Ms. Fry led the office in sales, sales dollar volume and transaction units, earning a top producer award. She also qualified for the office's Million Dollar a Month Club in June.

She qualified for Weichert's Million Dollar Sales and Marketed Clubs and the New Jersey State Million Dollar Club in 1998. She also won a

top production award for the sales region encompassing 13 offices in Union, Essex and Morris Counties.

Ms. Fry is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia, earning a bachelor's degree in design. She has lived in Westfield for 10 years, is married and has a daughter. She is a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church.

Mr. Manfra is a consistent top producer and a 20-year veteran of real estate. In June, he led the office in listing dollar volume and qualified for the office's Million Dollar a Month Club.

He is counted among the top two percent of Weichert's 7,500 sales associates as a member of the company's 1998 Ambassador's Club.

His 1998 achievements also earned him membership to Weichert's Million Dollar Sales and Marketed Clubs and the New Jersey State Million Dollar Club.

Before he joined Weichert, Mr. Manfra was director of sales, new homes and land development for another real estate company. A licensed broker, he is a member of the MLS.

Mr. Manfra, who is married and has two children, resides in Scotch Plains. He is an alumnus of Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire, where he studied economics and business management and administration.

Bottorff Honored By Health Group

WESTFIELD — Susan Bottorff of Westfield, a licensed Clinical Social Worker at Runnells Specialized Hospital, was honored recently as a "Person of Special Value" at the 54th Annual Dinner Meeting of the Mental Health Association of Union County.

"The theme of this year's dinner meeting was 'Celebrating Persons of Special Value,' and Susan is indeed a person of special value," said Union County Freeholder Mary P. Ruotolo, liaison to the Runnells Hospital Advisory Board of Managers. "As a psychiatric Social Worker in the Cornerstone Unit at Runnells Specialized Hospital, Susan has shown the dedication, patience, energy, creativity and compassion needed to be a success in her field."

Susan has a Masters of Social Work Degree from the New York University School of Social Work, and a Certificate in Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health of New York.

She has worked for Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County for the past nine years.
