Miss Wendy Benenson Engaged to Ian Lauer

Mr. and Mrs. Marty Benenson of Brooklyn have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Wendy F. Benenson of Clementon, to Ian O. Lauer, also of Clementon. He is the son of Mrs. Bobbi Lauer of Westfield and Gerhard Lauer of Fords.

The bride-to-be graduated from Sheepshead Bay High School in

Brooklyn in 1994, and from Stockton State College in 1998, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. She is employed as a biologist by Molecular Circuitry, Inc. in Philadelphia.

Her fiancι, a 1992 graduate of Westfield High School, earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management from Stockton State College in 1996. Mr. Lauer is employed as Assistant Manager with Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Hammondton.

A wedding is planned for October of 2000.

Heidi and Stephen Motyczka of Westfield have announced the birth of their daughter, Madeline Rachel Motyczka, on Sunday, July 11, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Madeline weighed 8 pounds and 8 ounces and measured 20Ό inches in length at birth.

Madeline's maternal grandparents are Rachel Hylan of Westfield and the late Robert Hylan.

Violet and Stefan Motyczka of Garwood are Madeline's paternal grandparents.

Novellos Welcome Anthony Joseph

Anthony and Angela Novello of Scotch Plains have announced the birth of their son, Anthony Joseph Novello, on Wednesday, July 21, at 1:36 p.m. at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Anthony weighed 6 pounds and 4 ounces and measured 18½ inches in length at birth.

Hoerles Welcome Daniel Michael

Beth and Ken Hoerle of Westfield have announced the birth of their son, Daniel Michael Hoerle, on Saturday, July 10, at 5:35 a.m. at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Daniel weighed 6 pounds and 8 ounces and measured 19 inches in length at birth.

He joins his brother, Christopher, 22 months.

His maternal grandparents are Bob and Joanne Voytovich of Jamesburg.

The paternal grandparents are Marilyn and Michael Cherego of Clark.

University N University N University N University N University News ews ews ews ews SCOTCH PLAINS – Lauren Blalock has been named a Cam

bridge Merit Scholar at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. The Cambridge Scholarship, valued at $14,000 per year, is awarded on the basis of SAT scores and grade point average.

Lauren graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in June, ranking third in her class with a 4.5 average. She also achieved High Honor Roll status all four years.

She was a Commended National Merit Scholar, Bloustein Scholar, Waksman Student Scholar from Rutgers University and first place winner in a national contest for the Geometer's Sketchpad by Key Curriculum.

She served as President and Editor of the newsletter for Students Concerned for the Needy and was an active member of Students Learning About Multiculturalism and the German Club. She served as an intern in the office of Senate President Donald T. DiFrancesco.

Lauren will pursue a major in Business and International Relations at Rhodes.

* * * * * SCOTCH PLAINS – Laura Cooper, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Cooper, formerly of Scotch Plains, graduated from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education on May 9.

Laura was also named to the Dean's List for the second semester.

of Westfield received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Studies from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt. On May 9.

Irina is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dumitru Avram of Westfield.

* * * * * WESTFIELD – Kimberly A. Fisher of Westfield received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Keene State College in Keene, N.H.

* * * * * WESTFIELD –Three Westfield students graduated from Montclair State University in May.

Christin Michelle Dorninger received a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching. Eliane Anne Panza earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Ecology with a concentration in Food and Nutrition/Dietetics. Ann Marie Bouselli Schneider received a Master of Arts Degree in Health Education.

* * * * * SCOTCH PLAINS – Kathleen

Marie Hughes of Scotch Plains received a Master of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ) of New Jersey on May 26.

Ms. Hughes is a graduate of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. She graduated magna cum laude from Kean University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.

She was a Dean's List student for three years and received the Excellence in Research Award at UMDNJ.

Ms. Hughes is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hughes of Scotch Plains.

* * * * * WESTFIELD — Liza Yannuzzi

of Westfield received a $2,500.00 Mike Harper Leadership scholarship award, renewable for three years, from the ConAgra Foundation.

Mike Harper Leadership scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding high school seniors who intend to enroll at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school.

Liza plans to a t t e n d Georgetown University in the Fall of 1999.

The scholarship program is coordinated and administered by Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA).

Liza was selected from more than 170 applicants. Students may apply to the program if their parent is employed by ConAgra or one of its subsidiaries. Mike Harper Leadership Scholars are chosen by CSFA based on their leadership activities, academic performance and an essay they have written on leadership.

The program is designed to identify young people who have the potential to be leaders in their chosen fields.

Liza is the daughter of Carolyn and John Yannuzzi of Westfield. Mr. Yannuzzi is an employee of Arrow Industries, a ConAgra company headquarted in Dallas

The scholarship program is named in recognition of Mike Harper, former ConAgra chairman and chief executive officer, for his outstanding business and civic leadership.

* * * * * The University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, has announced that four local students received undergraduate degrees during commencement exercises held on May 30.

These students are Brian H. DeMello and Enrico L. Russo of Westfield and Joseph S. Gentile and

Anthony E. Kwiatowski of Scotch Plains.

The University of Scranton has also announced that Michelle E. Legiec of Mountainside and Anne M. Lutkenhouse of Westfield were named to the Dean's List for the 1999 spring semester.

* * * * * Drew University, Madison, has revealed that Elizabeth Van Iperen

of Westfield has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor society. Elizabeth is a junior majoring in biology.

* * * * * Five local students have been named to the Dean's List for the 1999 spring semester at Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Connecticut.

These students are James Ciasulli,

a computer information systems major of Mountainside, Elizabeth DeAnna, a health science major of Mountainside, Erik Glazner, an English major from Scotch Plains,

Michael Hawkins, a marketing major from Scotch Plains and Renu Mehta, a health science major from Westfield.

Anna Maria Tammaro of Westfield received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing with a minor in Sociology on May 15 from the University Park campus of Pennsylvania State University.

A 1995 graduate of Westfield High School, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Tammaro of Westfield.

Susan Bredlau of Westfield, a senior philosophy major at Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus, has received a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship for up to $15,000 for graduate study in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Fellowship recipients are chosen on a basis of demonstrated achievements, exceptional promise and financial needs. The awards, which are administered by the U.S. Department of Education, are made for one year and are renewable for up to four years with an additional $10,222 per year going to the student's graduate university. Only 54 fellowships were awarded nationwide this year.

Susan is a member of the Schreyer Honors College and graduated with honors from Pennsylvania State University in May. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bredlau of Westfield.

Jennifer A. O'Brien of Westfield received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA, during its 153rd commencement exercises on May 28.

Jennifer, who majored in English and Political Science, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Brien of Westfield.

A Westfield High School graduate, she was a four-year member of the Division I varsity women's swim team and a member of the Purple Key Society at Holy Cross.

* * * * * Roanoke College in Virginia has announced that Paul S. Baly and

Melissa A. Long, both of Westfield, received bachelor degrees during the 144 th commencement ceremony held on May 8.

Paul, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Baly of Westfield, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. Melissa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Long, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.

Christine M. Hoyer of Fanwood has been named to the Dean's List for the 1999 spring semester at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania.

To qualify, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 on a scale of 4.0.

Christine is a sophomore majoring in psychology and completing a minor in philosophy. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Hoyer of Fanwood and a 1997 graduate of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.

She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, Etown After Dark, Habitat for Humanity and the Psychology Club.

* * * * * The University of New Hampshire has announced that Katie Allison Irwin of Westfield received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Family Studies from the School of Health and Human Services during commencement exercises held May 22.

Katie is a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She is the daughter of Elena Irwin and the late Donald Irwin.

* * * * * Dana Ruth Horning of Scotch Plains received the James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, commencement ceremony on May 16. Graduating near the top of her class, Dana majored in English and elementary education.

The award is presented annually to the graduating senior who combines the qualities of character, scholarship and leadership and embodies the spirit of sacrifice and selflessness to reflect the prize's namesake, James Carr.

Dana is a member of several academic honor societies. She has participated in intramural sports, sung for four years with the Christopher Wren Singers and performed with the Sinfonicron Light Opera Company and the Women's Chorus.

An active member of the Catholic Campus Ministry, she was also selected to participate in the college's Women's Leadership Conference last semester and has served as a campus Orientation Aid. She also received the Ewell Award for her service to the college this year.

Dana was also inducted into the Alpha of Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the school.

* * * * * WESTFIELD – Donald Bucciarelli of Westfield was recently cited by his guidance counselor Viviyanna Turk to receive an Honorable Mention award of $50 from the Union County School Counselors Association. Donald was recognized as a student who has contributed to his community and assisted those in need.

* * * * * WESTFIELD — Michael Nocera,

the son of Kathleen Judge of Westfield, has recently received an excellent attendance award from Lincoln Technical Institute (LTI) in Allentown, Pa.

Currently an Emmaus, Pa. resident, Michael graduated Rahway High School and is enrolled in the LTI computer technician program.

* * * * * SCOTCH PLAINS — Marine Staff Sergeant Anthony P. Foreman, the son of George W. Foreman, Sr. of Scotch Plains, was recently promoted to his present rank while serving at Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Iselin.

Mr. Foreman was promoted based on sustained superior job performance and proficiency in his designated specialty.

The 1984 graduate of Rahway Senior High School in Rahway joined the Marine Corps in June 1990.
