Western Union County Matmen Graduate Superstars; Have Some on the Horizon

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15

Fred Williams (189): Williams, a senior, plans to figure big at 189 this season. Last year, he won the Union County 189 pound crown, finished third in District 12, then fell in the second round of the Region 3 Tournament, finishing with a 235 record.

Cranford:

The Cougars had many surprises and harvested a fabulous season last year, wrestling in the finals of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Tournament. Superstar Pat Ekstrom at 215 has graduated, but several Cougars are still on the prowl. Head Coach Dom DiGioacchino, formerly the Head Coach of East Stroudsburg University for 17 years, plans to steer the Cougars in the right direction.

“It is a new start for the program. As far as I am concerned, the Cranford Board of Education has made a 100 percent commitment to this program,” said DiGioacchino. “I have been a head coach at a topranked national program in a Division 1 university for 17 years. That says a lot for them to bring me in. I’m excited about it. I know that we have some talent in this room. We are bunched up in some weight classes and we are going to have some holes.”

Senior John Donofrio and sopho placed third in District 11 and third

in the Region 3 tournament but had to pull out of the SuperRegions after sustaining a severe neck injury. Donofrio finished with a 235 record. It is highly possible that Donofrio may drop to 152 later in the season. “I have two of my brothers on the team with me and I would like to make it to the state finals this year,” said John Donofrio. “We (Greg and freshman Anthony who will wrestle 125) wrestle all the time.”

Pat Daly (103): Daly was a District 11 runner up and finished with a 1413 record. Remaining at 103, his chances for advancement are even better.

Rob Verhoeven (140): Verhoeven was the District 11 Champ at 132 last year. He placed third in the region and finished with a 1911 record. He has improved steadily and will be on the scene this year. There is an outside chance that he could even slip to 135.

Florio Hawkins (145/ 152): Hawkins was the District 11 runner up at 142 last year and finished with a 1512 record. Presently, he may compete at 152, but as the season goes on, he could drop to 145.

Greg Donofrio: He exploded onto the scene late in the season and captured the District 11, 147 pound crown, finishing with a 2110 record. This season, he exploded to the 171 pound class and could possibly use his lower weight speed to his advantage.

A. L. Johnson:

Todd DeWitt and Mike Mergott, who both advanced to Atlantic City, have graduated and Crusader Coach Ron Ferrara finds himself in another rebuilding year.

“Some of our lower weights will be pretty good but it’s still going to be an inexperienced group,” commented Ferrara.

Senior Joe Majocha and junior Ryan Best could be the best bets for the Crusaders this season.

Ryan Best (135): Last year, he was runner up in District 11 at 132. Jumping up a weight class should not be a problem.

Joe Majocha (145/ 152): As the first seed at 147 last year, he was upset but plans to get back onto the scene

this year.

Brearley:

The Bears appear to be getting stronger each year. The chief Bear emerging from the den is senior Atilla Vigilante.

Atilla Vigilante (145/ 152): Vigilante, a senior, was the Union County Champion at 145 last year, placed second in his district and finished with a 256 record. Vigilante is the Bears’ best bet to take district and county honors this year.

New Providence:

Head Coach Gary Bremer and the Pioneers received plenty of press last year with their phenomenal state champion Donnie DeFilippis. This season, the Pioneers, who will fill most of their weight classes, look to the talent of junior Ronnie Fiorilli.

Ronnie Fiorilli (189): This junior may be the Pioneers’ best hope. Last year, Fiorilli finished with a 166 record and figures to be in the hunt for a District 12 title.

Devil Girls, Boys Top Pingry; Boy Swimmers Fall to St. Joe

By BRUCE JOHNSON

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Both the Westfield High School girls and boys swimming teams displayed their respective talents as each easily submerged Pingry on December 8 and the boys were just touched out by highly ranked St. Joseph on December 9.

For the first seven events, the WestfieldSt. Joseph (Metuchen) dual meet was looking much like the previous six, with WHS swimming well and St. Joe’s slowly, but surely, pulling away.

The Falcons’ 10point lead at the break became 14 after Seth Klein won the 100yard butterfly and it was still 14 after a 12 finish by Kevin Hart and Pat Maloney in the 500 freestyle. But then things quietly — and quickly — changed. A 13 Blue Devil finish in the 200 free relay, followed by a 13 in the 100 back by freshmen Vincent Shen and John Chiasa, and a 123 sweep by Cliff Haldeman, Matt Vidovich and Colby Fagin in the 100 breaststroke gave WHS a shocking fourpoint lead into the final relay.

St. Joe’s still had enough swimmers to finish 13 and hang on for a wild 8684 victory, but the WHS swimmers were feeling pretty good about themselves.

“This is the best team I’ve ever been on,” said tricaptain Kyle McCloskey, a member of the 1997 and ’99 teams that finished second in the state.

WHS won two relays, with Shen, Vidovich, Greg Matthews and Haldeman capturing the 200 medley in 1: 45.72 and Scott Kautzmann, Haldeman, McCloskey and Zach Coppa taking the 200 free in 1: 35.41.

Kautzmann also won the 100 free (52.48), Shen the 100 back (59.52) and Vidovich the 100 breast (1: 05.59), plus there were dozens of best swims. Perhaps the best WHS swim was by Coppa, clocking a lifetime best 1: 51.97 in the 200 free, only to be touched out by Hart. It was the freshman’s fifth lifetime best swim in the early season.

A day earlier, Coppa had won the 200 IM and 100 free in personal bests

to lead the Devils to a 9872 victory over the Pingry School. Other WHS firsts were by Kautzmann (50 free), Shen (100 fly) and the 200 medley relay team of Haldeman, Fagin, Matthews and Kautzmann.

Things do not get any easier for the Blue Devils, who have already faced two Top Five teams in Bridgewater (an 8882 victory) and St. Joseph. Next Tuesday, topranked Shawnee comes to Wallace Pool for a 5 p. m. double dual (girls and boys meets). The Renegades have won three straight state A Division titles since falling to WHS in the ’96 final.

SPF Raider Dave Loewinger 112 Scotch PlainsFanwood:

The Raiders lost some superstars but are very balanced with above average wrestlers. Every weight class will be filled. Leading the Raiders will be junior Gary Cousar, seniors Dave Loewinger and Mike Grabel and sophomore Lucas Francavilla.

Gary Cousar (189): While wrestling in a very competitive 189 class last year, he placed second in the districts and fourth in Region 3 to finish with a very good 207 record. Now, as a more mature and refined wrestler, he is expected to advance even further.

Dave Loewinger (112): He placed third in District 12 at 114 and finished with a 197 record. Now in his senior year, Loewinger plans to finish strong and make some waves in the weight division.

Mike Grabel (152160): Grabel, a senior, placed third in the district at 145 last year, qualified for the Region 3 tournament and posted an 189 record. Of those nine losses, several went down to the wire. With a little more desire, those losses will be turned to victories.

Lucas Francavilla (125): As a freshman, he placed second in District 12 at 105, was a Region 3 qualifier and finished with a 156 record. Despite jumping to 125, Francavilla has grown into the class and has no body fat. more Greg Donofrio left a huge imprint

and, along with juniors Rob Verhoeven and Florio Hawkins and sophomore Pat Daly, will lead the Cougars forward again this year.

John Donofrio (152/ 160): Donofrio has been a major force since his freshman year. Last year, at 154, he
